Part One – By Compariqo’s Head of Risk Managment, Dan Holding.

Converting basements and creating floors below ground level has become a popular way of creating additional living space. This comes with obvious risk and the cost to remediate water ingress can be huge.

Keep the water out…

…and follow  BS8102- 2009 “Code of practice for protection of below ground structures against water from the ground”. This code sets out in detail how waterproofing should be undertaken in new and existing buildings.

Get the right people involved

A waterproofing specialist should be included as part of the design team so that an integrated waterproofing solution is created. Such professionals will hold a Certified Surveyor In Structural Waterproofing qualification (CSSW) and can be found on the Property Care Association (PCA) website

Design

The certified surveyor will fuse their knowledge to provide  information and guidance that assists with and influences the design, installation and future maintenance of the waterproofed structure

Its not just basements

The requirements will also be applicable to but not limited to

  • Semi- basements
  • Stepped floor slabs
  • Lift pits
  • Car parks

Get the right guarantee

Compariqo wants to protect the end user so all completed works will require an Insurance Backed Guarantee (IBG) which covers all materials and workmanship. This means that Insurers will fulfil the contractors written guarantee where the contractor has ceased to trade and issues arise.
